Responsible Gambling

Last updated: June 2025

("we", "us", "our") operates the gaming facilities at Calvessian Royal Retreat, . We are committed to providing a safe, fair and enjoyable environment for every guest. This page sets out the measures we have in place to support responsible gambling and explains how guests can access assistance, impose personal limits or exclude themselves from our gaming areas.

We recognise that gambling is a leisure activity that is not suitable for everyone and that, for some people, it can become harmful. Our approach is to ensure that every person who chooses to gamble at our property does so freely, within their own means and with full awareness of the risks involved.

1. Adult-Only Access to Gaming Areas

Entry to all gaming areas at Calvessian Royal Retreat is restricted to guests who are aged 18 years or over. This requirement is a legal obligation under New Zealand law and a condition of our operation. Our gaming-floor staff are trained to challenge any person who appears to be under the minimum age, and access will be refused to anyone who cannot produce satisfactory proof of age.

Acceptable proof of age includes, but is not limited to:

  • A current New Zealand or international passport.
  • A current New Zealand driver licence or overseas equivalent.
  • A Kiwi Access Card or another government-issued photo-identity document.

No person under 18 is permitted to enter, remain in or be supervised within any designated gaming area, regardless of whether they are accompanied by an adult. If you notice a person who appears to be under the minimum age on the gaming floor, please notify a member of staff immediately.

Guests who are guests of the hotel in non-gaming areas but who wish to access our gaming facilities must separately satisfy the age-verification requirement at the point of entry to those facilities.

2. Gambling Is Optional

Participation in any gaming activity at Calvessian Royal Retreat is entirely voluntary. No guest is ever required to gamble as a condition of their stay, any promotional offer or their enjoyment of any other property amenity. Our non-gaming spaces remain fully accessible to every guest without restriction.

We encourage every guest to approach gambling as a form of entertainment with a fixed, pre-determined cost — not as a means of generating income or recovering money already spent. The house retains a mathematical advantage in all games, and no strategy guarantees a winning outcome over time.

Before you begin any gaming session, we suggest you:

  • Decide in advance the maximum amount you are willing to spend and treat it as the cost of your entertainment.
  • Set a time limit for your session and stick to it.
  • Leave payment cards, additional cash and other funds in a secure location so that you are not tempted to exceed your pre-set budget.
  • Avoid gambling when you are tired, upset, under pressure or in a state that may impair your judgement.

3. Personal Limits: Time and Spending

We support every guest's right to control how much time and money they spend gambling. The following voluntary tools are available on request at the gaming-floor guest-services desk.

3.1 Spending Limits

You may ask a member of our gaming team to record a personal spending limit for any single visit or for a rolling period. Once a limit is set, our staff will remind you of it upon request and will support you in stepping away from play when that limit is reached. You may also request that complimentary gaming-related credits or promotional allowances be excluded from being offered to you.

3.2 Time Limits

You may request that a member of our team check in with you after a set period and remind you of the time spent in the gaming area. Clock displays are positioned throughout the gaming floor to assist you in keeping track of time. We encourage all guests to take note of the time before they begin play and to set a personal reminder on their mobile device if they find it helpful.

3.3 Reviewing and Adjusting Limits

Limits you set can be discussed with our gaming team at any time. Where a guest wishes to increase or remove a limit they have voluntarily put in place, our team will apply a short cooling-off period before any change takes effect, in order to help prevent impulsive decisions made in the moment. Requests to reduce a limit or to add further restrictions take effect immediately.

4. Recognising When Gambling May Be Causing Harm

Gambling is enjoyable for the majority of people who participate, but it can become a source of harm for some individuals. The following are common signs that gambling may no longer be a purely recreational activity:

Area of Life Signs to Be Aware Of
Financial Spending more than you can comfortably afford; using funds set aside for essential expenses; borrowing money to gamble or to cover gambling losses.
Time and Priorities Gambling for longer than intended; cancelling other plans in order to gamble; losing track of time while playing.
Emotional Feeling irritable or restless when not gambling; gambling to escape worry or low mood; feeling guilty or ashamed after a session.
Relationships Concealing gambling activity from family or friends; arguments about money or time spent gambling; withdrawal from social activities.
Thinking Patterns Believing you are due a win after a losing run; returning to chase losses; overestimating your ability to predict outcomes.

Recognising one or more of these signs in your own behaviour is a meaningful first step. We encourage you to speak with a member of our team, take a break, or consider the self-exclusion options described below.

5. Taking a Break

At any point during a gaming session you are welcome to step away from play. You do not need a reason. Our staff will never pressure you to continue playing, and you are free to leave any gaming area at any time without explanation.

If you would like a structured break, you may speak with a member of our gaming team and ask to be reminded not to return to the floor for a specified period — for example, for the remainder of the day. This is an informal, non-recorded arrangement that you can use at your own discretion. It is separate from the formal self-exclusion programme described in the following section.

We encourage all guests to take regular breaks during gaming sessions: step outside for fresh air, have something to eat, or spend time in a non-gaming area of the property. Fatigue and continuous play are known to affect decision-making.

6. Self-Exclusion from Calvessian Royal Retreat

Self-exclusion is a formal arrangement under which you ask us to refuse you entry to our gaming areas for a defined minimum period. It is designed for guests who feel that taking a break through willpower alone has not been sufficient and who would like structural support in stepping away from gambling at this property.

6.1 How to Apply

To request self-exclusion, please approach any member of our gaming management team or visit the guest-services desk on the gaming floor. You may also contact us by email at info@calvessianroyalretreat.com to arrange an appointment. You will be asked to provide your name, a current photograph and any additional identifying details that will assist our team in recognising and intercepting you at the point of entry.

6.2 Duration

Self-exclusion at Calvessian Royal Retreat is available for the following minimum periods:

  • 3 months
  • 6 months
  • 1 year
  • Indefinite (until a formal review is requested by you)

We recommend choosing the longest period that feels appropriate for your circumstances. An exclusion cannot be lifted early at your request before the chosen minimum term has elapsed.

6.3 What Self-Exclusion Covers

Once your self-exclusion is recorded, you will be refused entry to all designated gaming areas within the Calvessian Royal Retreat property. Our staff will make reasonable efforts to identify and intercept you at the boundary of those areas. You may continue to access all other areas of the hotel that are unrelated to gaming.

Self-exclusion at our property applies only to gaming areas at this address. It does not automatically extend to other venues or gaming operators. We encourage guests who need broader support to contact the local authorities or support services described in Section 8 below.

6.4 What Happens if You Breach Your Exclusion

If you enter a gaming area while under a self-exclusion arrangement, our team will ask you to leave. We will not be liable for any gambling activity that takes place as a result of any circumvention of the exclusion, though we will take reasonable steps to prevent it. We will not return any funds won during a period of exclusion.

6.5 Lifting an Exclusion

Once the minimum self-exclusion period has elapsed, you may request a review in writing to info@calvessianroyalretreat.com. A cooling-off period will apply between your written request and the exclusion being lifted, to allow you to reflect on the decision before it takes effect.

7. Support from People You Trust

Family members, partners and close friends are sometimes the first to notice changes in a person's relationship with gambling. If someone close to you has expressed concern, we encourage you to take those observations seriously, even if you do not yet share their concern. Equally, if you are worried about a person close to you, the following guidance may help.

7.1 Talking to Someone You Trust

Speaking openly with a trusted person about gambling habits can be a constructive first step. You do not need to wait until there is a serious problem. Consider sharing:

  • How much time you are spending gambling.
  • The amounts you are spending and whether they are within your means.
  • How you feel before, during and after a session.
  • Whether gambling has affected other parts of your life.

7.2 If You Are Concerned About Someone Else

If you are worried about a friend or family member's gambling, you are welcome to speak in confidence with a member of our gaming management team. We can provide general information about the responsible-gambling tools and resources available and explain how the self-exclusion process works, so that you are well placed to support the person you are concerned about.

You cannot apply for self-exclusion on behalf of another adult without their direct, informed consent. However, where a third party raises a formal concern, our team will take note and remain vigilant in monitoring the situation within the limits of our obligations and that individual's privacy rights.

8. Local Support and Guidance

New Zealand has a framework of local and national support available to anyone affected by gambling-related harm. We encourage any guest who is concerned about their own gambling, or the gambling of someone close to them, to seek independent information and assistance through New Zealand's relevant local authorities and community support services.

Information about where to find support is available through:

  • Local community service providers in the Christchurch and Canterbury region, who can offer confidential, free guidance to individuals and families.
  • Your local general authority, who can direct you to the appropriate government-funded resources for gambling harm prevention and support in New Zealand.
  • Online and printed resources issued by New Zealand's responsible-gambling framework, available from public libraries and community centres throughout Christchurch.

Our gaming team can provide a printed leaflet with general guidance and information about accessing community-based support in the Christchurch area. Please ask at the gaming-floor guest-services desk.

9. Our Commitment and Staff Training

All members of our gaming team receive regular training in responsible-gambling practices as part of their ongoing professional development. This training equips them to:

  • Recognise behaviours that may indicate a guest is experiencing gambling-related harm.
  • Engage sensitively and non-judgementally with guests who may need support.
  • Explain and process self-exclusion and limit requests clearly and confidentially.
  • Refer guests to appropriate external support information when needed.
  • Enforce the minimum age requirement rigorously and without exception.

Our commitment to responsible gambling extends beyond regulatory compliance. We view it as a fundamental part of the experience we offer and the values we uphold as a property and as a business operating within the Christchurch community.

We review our responsible-gambling policies and practices regularly to ensure they reflect current best practice and meet the expectations of our guests and the wider community.
